Transcoding is the bottleneck
A media server like Jellyfin or Plex streams happily on a 2GB VPS, but live transcoding eats CPU. If you mostly direct-play, specs barely matter; if you transcode 1080p, budget more cores.
What to look for
- Multiple CPU cores for software transcoding
- SSD storage for metadata and transcode temp
- Full root access to mount media storage
- Decent bandwidth for remote streams
Install Jellyfin
sudo apt update
sudo apt install curl
curl -fsSL https://repo.jellyfin.org/install-debuntu.sh | sudo bash
Keep media in Direct Play format (H.264/AAC) to avoid transcoding entirely. An unmanaged VPS is a cheap, always-on home for your library.
