Why Magento needs real resources
Magento 2 is one of the heaviest PHP platforms you can self-host. The official minimum is 2GB of RAM, but real stores should budget 4GB or more once Elasticsearch, Redis, and background cron jobs are running.
Key specs to prioritize
- 4GB+ RAM so catalog reindexing and checkout don’t stall
- NVMe storage for fast product and search queries
- PHP 8.2+ and MySQL 8.0 for current security and speed
- Full root access to tune
opcacheand PHP memory limits
A sane install order
sudo apt update
sudo apt install nginx php8.2-fpm php8.2-mysql mariadb-server redis-server
Enable opcache and raise memory_limit before running the Magento installer. A 2GB VPS can technically run it, but a 4GB+ plan with more RAM leaves headroom for traffic spikes and keeps the admin panel responsive.
