Game servers are CPU-hungry and latency-sensitive, which makes them different from web workloads. Here’s how to size one.

What a game server needs

  • High single-thread CPU — Minecraft, Valheim, and similar benefit from fast cores.
  • RAM — 2 GB for a small vanilla Minecraft, 4–8 GB for modded or many players.
  • Low-latency network and an open UDP port.

The pick: Hostinger KVM 2

Hostinger’s KVM 2 (8 GB RAM, ~$8.99/mo intro) handles a modded Minecraft server or several small game servers at once, with NVMe storage for fast world loads. For a light vanilla server, KVM 1 (4 GB, ~$6.49/mo) is enough.

Run it as a service

java -Xmx4G -Xms4G -jar server.jar nogui
  • Use tmux or systemd so the server survives disconnects.
  • Pick a datacenter near your players for the lowest ping.
  • Schedule world backups — worlds get corrupted.

Bottom line: 4 GB for vanilla, 8 GB for modded or busy servers. CPU speed and player proximity matter as much as RAM.
