Disk space is the whole game
File storage is about capacity, durability, and I/O, not CPU. A 2GB VPS with large SSD storage runs Nextcloud, SFTP, or MinIO easily — just size the disk for your data.
What to check
- Ample SSD storage for the files themselves
- Daily backups to a second location
- Dedicated IPv4 and a domain for HTTPS
- Full root access to mount extra volumes
Nextcloud quick start
sudo apt update
sudo apt install nginx php8.2-fpm mariadb-server
Add a cron job and enable HTTPS with Let’s Encrypt before uploading anything sensitive. An unmanaged KVM VPS is the cheapest way to own your files without per-GB cloud storage fees.
